CPE 4th and 5th graders participated in the 22nd Annual Josephine County Tree Plant on February 4th. The students planted Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, cedar, and sugar pine seedlings on Jo County forest land. This large section of public land burned following a lightning strike a few decades ago. It was either poorly re-planted or not replanted at all, which resulted in a “scrub forest” of poison oak, manzanita, and scrub oaks. Since then, two volunteers who live nearby (see the Jeep pics below) have been clearing sections each year, and students have been arriving by the bus load to re-plant native conifers under the supervision of the BLM. Each of the last two years, CPE’s transportation to the event has been provided by the Oregon Forestry Resources Initiative. Here are a few pictures from this year’s planting, including our picnic lunch at Riverside Park in Grants Pass.
