So Long 5th Graders!

Thursday at 8:30 a.m. is our final assembly, including the Year-in-Review and 5th Grade Baby Picture Program. We’ll be saying goodbye to a wonderful crop of 5th graders and hopefully making a few of them (and their parents) shed a few tears. To warm you up, here’s another baby picture. Any guesses?

Other events this week include our Don Jones Water Park Picnic at 10:30 on Monday. Kids need a sack lunch, a towel, and clothes appropriate for the water (Swim trunks? Something to change into once the teeth start chattering?). On Wednesday is Roadrunner Day, which includes the bounce houses and the 5th grade vs Staff Softball Game (teachers will be looking to avenge an unmentionable event back in February). And of course there’s Thursday, our last day, which includes the Awards Assembly, report cards, and a two hour early release.

Regarding report cards, I was reminded at Crater Graduation the other night that kids change a lot between the 5th and 12th grades. Over the years I’ve had a lot of kids who seemed lost and dysfunctional in elementary school do just fine by the time they got to high school. I’ve also had some very capable and intelligent elementary students get sidetracked and miss out on opportunities to play sports, earn scholarships, and graduate on time. All that being said, take these report cards for what they are: an indicator of performance and habits right now. Successful students need to keep working hard. Struggling students need to keep trying. I was fortunate enough to watch the bulk of my kids from 2001-03 graduate last week (three of them appear above). I look forward to sitting in the grandstand in June of 2018 to watch every one of my current Room 15 Rotters cross the stage and secure their diploma.

  7. Already? It’s only been a weekend! Watch old episodes of the newscasts and then call Mackl or one of the others. Plan something to do. Oh, hey, I have an idea…how about you plan and set-up the next Hopkins Street Clean-up for sometime after 4th of July? I’ll assist you, but you could be “in charge.” What do you think?

  8. Thanks, Jocelyn. I miss all you guys. Keep checking the Daily Platypus for special events. I’ll get something organized in a couple weeks.
