Wed Sept 9

Ooh look! Instead of an African lion or an Everglades croc, they have a ginormous scorpion!

Hi kids. It’s been a rough 24 hours for a lot of people in the Rogue Valley. Hopefully none of you or your relatives have been terribly impacted by the wild fire. Whatever the case, it means our day today will be a bit different.

Start your day in Google Classroom at 8:30 if you can (it is not required). Normally this would be a fun list-writing activity, but given the fire situation, it will be just a chance for you to talk about it. You do not have to participate, but if you do, stay with the thread for at least the half hour and be willing to read and respond to your classmates’ comments. Also remember we are going to talk about why studying history is important.

Almost every students showed up for our first Zoom meeting! That’s incredible! Nice job, you guys! Unfortunately, we’re not able to have a Zoom meeting today. Today I will try to get the class split into two groups for meetings on Thursday and Friday.

Please continue working in Acellus. I know there have already been glitches (a bunch of you keep trying to join Hadley’s class, which is making me jealous!). But we’ll slowly work out all those problems. By week’s end you need to have watched the orientation video, taken the pre-test, and completed steps 1 through 8. Watch the video and then do the “addition” lessons (#1-5). You also have your first math homework sheet, Worksheet A. It comes with the answer key, so you’re self-correcting. We’re trusting you to use the answer key wisely so that you get better at math. You do not need to turn in the homework sheet.

You also need to join the Acellus Math Facts class. Remember, in Math Facts you can go as far as you want (but be sure to actually get the problems right). Six of you have already started–great job!

In history you’re continuing your first few entries about why we study history to begin with. In my opinion, it’s just as important as math and reading!

Part 2 of Boy, Tales of Childhood is ready to go. Listen carefully…every once in a while there’s a little surprise in there somewhere.

Finally, you will be starting in Lexia today. You’re supposed to do a minimum of sixty minutes a week–but there’s a catch. Lexia only counts minutes when you’re actually working and when you’re actually doing things right. If you’re just guessing, it can tell and it dings you. If you start the program and then wander into the kitchen for grub, it deducts minutes! You can’t outsmart it. You can’t trick it! You can only hope to survive it! To get into Lexia, use your Clever app.
