Elapsed time is one of the more difficult concepts kids have to grasp. See the examples below showing how we’re laying out a problem. There are other strategies that work for kids, so if you come up with something that works better for them, that’s okay! I’ve seen several good methods in class including as Faalele’s and Alexis’s.
Elapsed time can be done using subtraction, but it causes some hitches for kids so we focus more on “adding on.”
Here are several examples. # 1 is the traditional method of adding on; #2 shows the traditional method with a twelve hour jump. Picture #3 shows how straight subtraction only sometimes makes sense to kids. Finally, #4 depicts a problem where you’re just backtracking. In this case, subtraction is appropriate.

Sometimes people make silly mistakes. For example, they forget they have the ballots in their pocket and then toss them in the washing machine. So, I must apologize, but we will have to vote again on Monday. I’m really proud of Page, Jaidah, Sydney, Alexis, Klaire, Jonah, Caroline, and Peyton. It takes a ton of courage to run for a position knowing that you might not be chosen. Whatever the outcome, each of you should be proud of yourself. Good luck in our re-vote on Monday!
The Super Sentence program requires students craft one error-free sentence of a specific structure. The kids write and respond to practice sentences early in the week and then test late in the week. This was our first week in the program, so the structure was “Standard Sentence.” The topics were beasts, kindness, and Bubbles (either our class monkey or regular old bubbles). I’m excited about our new batch of 5th graders! Given that we’re starting this year with a renewed sense of normalcy–or close to it–makes it extra special. One way to help your child have a great year is to attend Back-to-School Night on September 20th (5:30-7:00). It’ll give us a chance to connect and it will provide you with all the details necessary to build a successful and happy fifth grader.
Know that our three 5th grade classes work closely together, so regardless of which class a kiddo wanted to be in, they’ll still be interacting with all their friends, as well as all three of us teachers. At our end of the year awards assembly (and Baby Picture Show–see below), Cyrus H. and Leilani R. received Student-of the-Month Awards. Cyrus earned his by being engaged in classroom learning. Whenever we were studying anything having to do with animals or nature, Cyrus has his hand up. He also volunteered to read aloud during our Island of the Blue Dolphins novel study. Leilani earned her award by working hard in class and consistently having a positive “can-do” attitude, even as the year was concluding and everyone was tired of all the work. Great job Cyrus and Leilani.
Jaylee H., Kadence N., and Laloni M. were all named Presidential Scholars. That’s the elementary equivalent to “Top 5%,” meaning that these three were the highest achieving fifth graders at CPE. Keep that up, kids, and there will be bigger rewards in the future!
Pablo G., Ashton H., Van C., and Brayden P. all earned fitness medals for being in the top 35 fourth and fifth graders in our fitness program. Pablo and Ashton each ran more than 400 laps around the CPE campus, which is nearly 200 miles. Pretty impressive!
It’s been said that half the battle is just showing up, so we also want to acknowledge Eddy for having perfect attendance, and Pablo, Izzy, and Jeremiah for having excellent attendance, missing just a couple of days or being tardy.
Jenica, Kadence, Jaylee, Laloni, and Jaxon were all nominated to attend SOU Academy, which is a college-oriented experience in which the students actually live on the college campus and attend classes for a week. Charlotte was our DARE essay winner (while Jaylee and Kadence were also finalists). The top honor at CPE is the Rotary Student-of-the-Year Award. The award is given to the student best exemplifying academic excellence, good citizenship, strong attendance and participation, and positive relationships. Lily Barsalou from Mr. Hadley’s class won the award, but Laloni and Kadence were among eight students nominated. Great job!
Finally, the class as a whole shared the Floor Hockey Sportsmanship trophy with Mr. Hadley’s class for demonstrating positive attitudes during the tourney.
Whether your name appears here or not, there are more achievements to accomplish in middle school. All of my students are capable of earning Perfect Attendance, Academic Honors, and my personal favorite, the Solid as a Rock Award. Go for it, kids!
Congrats to Jenica T., Brayden P., Van C., and Mason W. for being Spotlight Award winners at the May assembly. Jenica received the award for always being respectful, cheerful and positive. She has been a wonderful additional to CPE this year! Brayden is an all-around excellent student, solid citizen, and good friend. He makes the classroom a better place. Van, meanwhile, has an exceptional imagination which he uses to entertain his peers. It earned him the “Creature of Creativity” award. Finally, Mason received the perseverant award for never giving up. He keeps going even when the content or activity is difficult. Great job, roadrunners!
